Skilled Labour Supply — Sweden

Hire Workers in Sweden on the Current Salary Rules

Sweden now sets a salary floor that decides most work permit applications before anything else is considered. We source skilled workers from India, Nepal and Bangladesh who clear it, or who fall under a shortage-occupation exemption.

What You Need to Hire Workers in Sweden

A Swedish work permit is granted by Migrationsverket on an offer of employment. Three conditions have to hold together: the post must have been advertised in Sweden and across the EU and EEA, the terms must be at least equivalent to the applicable Swedish collective agreement, and the relevant trade union must be given the chance to comment on those terms.

Since 1 June 2026 a fourth condition sits above the other three. The salary must reach a floor set at 90 per cent of the Swedish median wage, currently SEK 33,390 per month. Because it is pegged to the median rather than fixed, it is reviewed as new wage statistics are published. The threshold applies at the moment the decision is made, not the moment the application is filed — which means a file submitted under an older figure can still be judged against the current one.

That floor is why Sweden is not a volume market for general labour, and we will not pretend otherwise. What it is is a good market for genuinely skilled trades. A list of shortage occupations sits below the full threshold, and skilled industrial and metalworking roles are among the categories represented on it. If your vacancy is a certified trade rather than an unskilled post, Sweden is worth running. If it is not, it will not clear on any amount of paperwork.

Who We Are

Hire Across Euro is an independent international recruitment consultancy with an active sourcing network across India, Nepal and Bangladesh. The founder runs every engagement personally, so a Swedish employer gets the wage arithmetic before the proposal, not inside the invoice.

What We Handle for Swedish Employers

Sourcing and Vetting

We shortlist workers whose training documents and work history stand up to consular scrutiny. Every file is checked for document completeness and practical competence before it reaches you.

Salary Test and Permit Filing

We test the offer against the current wage floor and the applicable collective agreement before anything is filed, then assemble the Migrationsverket application and the advertising record behind it.

Union Consultation Handling

We prepare the terms statement that goes to the relevant trade union for comment, and manage the correspondence that follows it.

Arrival and Onboarding

Workers are briefed on Swedish workplace culture, collective agreement entitlements and personal registration before they travel.

Trades Where We Hire Workers in Sweden

Four areas where Swedish demand is real and the wage floor is realistically clearable.

Welding and Metalwork

Coded welders, fabricators and sheet metal workers with tested process qualifications.

Industrial Maintenance

Maintenance fitters, machine technicians and process operators for manufacturing plants.

Construction Trades

Certified construction trades for contractors working to collective agreement rates.

Heavy Vehicle and Plant

Plant operators and heavy vehicle technicians with documented licences and training.

How to Hire Workers in Sweden Under the 2026 Wage Floor

Swedish employers who last recruited from outside the EU a few years ago are working from a rulebook that no longer applies. The permit mechanics are unchanged — Migrationsverket, an offer of employment, EU-wide advertising, collective agreement terms, union consultation. What changed is that a hard salary floor now sits in front of all of it.

From 1 June 2026 the floor is 90 per cent of the Swedish median wage, currently SEK 33,390 a month. The design matters as much as the number: because it is a percentage of the median rather than a fixed sum, it moves as Swedish wages move, and it is applied at the date of decision rather than the date of application. An employer who budgets against today’s figure for a hire landing next year is budgeting against the wrong number, and we will say so.

The practical effect is a sorting of the market. Unskilled and low-wage roles no longer have a viable non-EU route in Sweden, which is a straightforward consequence of the policy rather than an administrative problem to be solved. Skilled trades are a different matter. A shortage-occupation list sits below the full threshold and covers a substantial number of categories, including skilled industrial and metalworking roles, and files in those categories continue to be granted.

So the first question for a Swedish requirement is not “how do we get a permit” but “does this post pay enough to be permitted at all”. We answer that before quoting. Employers whose requirement is volume rather than skill usually look at markets structured for it — Croatia among them. Our live roles are on the vacancies board, and our fee and treatment standards are in ethical recruitment compliant with EU labour law. How the Process Works

Six steps, beginning with the wage test that decides whether the rest is worth running.

01

Requirement Call

We go through headcount, roles, worksite location, contract length and the start date you are working back from.

02

Shortlist

We present vetted workers from India, Nepal, Bangladesh or Pakistan with their training and work-history evidence attached.

03

Permit Filing

We file the work permit application with Migrationsverket and manage the union consultation on terms.

04

Visa Application

We prepare the consular file and the employer-side documents your HR team is asked to produce, and track it to decision.

05

Arrival

We coordinate travel and the first days in Sweden, including personal registration and the practical basics.

06

Onboarding

We support induction at the worksite and stay reachable through the first weeks of the placement.

Quick Answers

What is the Swedish work permit salary threshold?

Since 1 June 2026 it is SEK 33,390 a month, set at 90 per cent of the Swedish median wage. Because it is a percentage rather than a fixed sum it moves as Swedish wages move, so a hire landing next year should be budgeted against the next figure rather than this one.

Why does Sweden not work for general labour?

Because the wage floor sits well above general labour rates, so those posts have no viable non-EU route regardless of how genuine the shortage is. This is the intended effect of the policy rather than an administrative obstacle, and no amount of paperwork changes it.

How long does a Swedish work permit take?

Long enough that the threshold can change underneath you, which is the practical risk. Because the salary test is applied at the date of decision rather than the date of filing, a pending application can be judged against a higher figure than the one it was prepared against.

Since 1 June 2026 the floor is 90 per cent of the Swedish median wage, currently SEK 33,390 per month. It is pegged to the median rather than fixed, so it is revised as new wage statistics are published.

The one in force when Migrationsverket decides, not when you filed. A pending application can therefore be judged against a higher figure than the one it was prepared against, which is worth knowing before you commit to a start date.

In practice, no. The wage floor is set well above general labour rates, so those posts do not have a viable non-EU route. We would rather tell you that at the first call than run a file that cannot succeed.

Yes. A list of shortage occupations sits below the full threshold, and skilled industrial and metalworking categories are represented on it. Whether your specific role is covered is something we check against the current list before quoting.

The relevant union is given the opportunity to comment on the offered terms as part of the process. It is not a veto, but a terms statement that invites an adverse comment is a file that will struggle, so we prepare it properly.

The dominant cost is not our fee or the state charge, it is the salary itself: SEK 33,390 a month is the floor before pension and holiday entitlements. Employers who model this properly usually find the arithmetic works for a certified trade and does not work for a general operative, and we would rather establish that on the first call than after a refusal.

Yes, if the decision lands on or after the date the threshold took effect. Sweden applies the salary test at the point of decision rather than the point of application, so a file prepared under an older figure can still be measured against the current one. Extension cases were given a limited transitional window.
